Styrene-butadiene rubber, also known as SBR, is a synthetic rubber made of styrene and butadiene.

At Sperry & Rice LLC, we use SBR in our custom rubber components, extruded gaskets, and sponge rubber products.

Styrene-butadiene rubber was developed in World War II to replace natural rubber, which was in short supply. Today, it can still be substituted for rubber in many cases, and at a fraction of the cost.

SBR is used in components for several industries. It is found in auto belts, hoses, brakes and clutch pads, as well as nearly 50% of all car tires. SBR is also used commonly in many household items:

• Shoe heels and soles
• Gaskets
• Cutting boards
• Batteries
• Adhesives and caulks

SBR is versatile and flexible, with good abrasive resistance, making it a suitable choice when the application calls for a hard rubber.
